Wenjun Zhao and Maksym Zubkov Receive UBC Math Awards for Outstanding Teaching by Postdoctoral Fellows
At the 2025 UBC Mathematics graduation ceremony, Wenjun Zhao and Maksym Zubkov were each honoured with the Award for Outstanding Teaching by a postdoctoral fellow.
Wenjun Zhao is one of the department’s top small-class instructors. Students consistently highlight her individualized support, responsiveness to feedback, and clear communication of complex mathematical ideas. One student shared how Dr. Zhao provided thoughtful academic guidance during an illness, while many others praised her for actively seeking and incorporating student input. Her ability to make advanced mathematics accessible has left a lasting impression. As one nomination put it, "I believe other instructors should follow in her footsteps—she is deeply rooted in the world of mathematics, yet teaches in a way that students can easily understand."
Maksym Zubkov received the highest number of student nominations among all small-class instructors this year. Known for his enthusiasm, sense of humour, and student-centred approach, he’s praised for making abstract concepts engaging and relevant. Students commend his ability to connect course material across different areas of mathematics and for encouraging deep understanding rather than rote answers. One nominator wrote, "He often connects what we are learning to other parts of math," while another noted, "He guides the student through the process—not just revealing the answer, but approaching from multiple angles in a positive, supportive way."
