Programs of Study
The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to Undergraduate degrees in three faculties:
B.A. PROGRAM

There is no Physics or Chemistry requirement for students pursuing the B.A. program, but students need to satisfy a Computing requirement. This can be fulfilled by taking CPSC 110 and either CPSC 210 or MATH 210. Arts students must also satisfy Literature and Language requirements. The B.A. program has other special requirements, including a first-year writing course and a fourth-year research-intensive course (fulfilled by one of MATH 437, 441, 444, or 462). There are credit restrictions for a B.A., limiting the number of non-Arts courses. Math courses count as Science courses. It is often possible to obtain permission from the Arts Faculty for exceptions to the Arts credit requirement.
The Honours program in Arts requires the completion of 120 specified credits with an average of at least 68%. A Mathematics Minor (18 credits of courses in Mathematics numbered 300 or higher) along with another Arts Major could be taken. It is also possible to take a Major in Mathematics and a Minor in another Arts, Commerce or Science subject. A Double Major program is available in Arts. There is also a special Mathematics/Economics Major. Entry into this program is overseen by Economics.

Students intending to pursue an Honours program are strongly urged to take MATH 120, 121, 223, 226, and 227. This eases the transition to the third year of the Honours program. The Honours program in Science requires the completion of 132 credits. A Mathematics Minor (18 credits of courses in Mathematics numbered 300 or higher) along with another Science Major may be taken. It is also possible to take a Major in Mathematics and a Minor in another Science, Commerce or Arts subject. A Double Major program is available in Science. There is also a special Mathematics/Economics Major, and a Combined Major in Computer Science and Mathematics.
B.A.Sc. PROGRAM

In this Minor, students take a number of advanced mathematics courses, in addition to those required by the program. By carefully picking electives and taking some summer courses, it is possible to complete this program within four years. It is advantageous to obtain Advanced Placement credit (Calculus AB or BC) or Challenge credit for MATH 100 and/or MATH 101 prior to entering UBC.
Math (B.Sc.) & Education (B.Ed.) Program
If enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program, students can pursue a dual degree in Science (B.Sc. Math) and Education (B.Ed. Math Education), which may lead to teaching secondary courses in Mathematics (Grades 8 to 12).
The course selection for the B.Sc./B.Ed. dual degree should take place in the Fall of the second year after gaining admission to the appropriate major program in Science and must receive approval from the Faculties of Science and Education. All students will initially be accepted on a provisional basis and given access to Faculty of Education courses beginning in term two of the second year. Admission will be confirmed only after successful completion of year two of the Science major and the in-school practicum in the May following the second year.
In addition, students must participate in volunteer or work-experience programs with youth aged 13-18 to meet the requirements of the Bachelor of Education program. Students must satisfy all the degree and program requirements for both the major in the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Education Secondary program. Some individual courses may be considered to satisfy requirements for both degrees.
This Dual Degree program is currently open only to students pursuing a Major in Mathematics or Physics.

Applying to the B.Sc. & B.Ed. Dual Degree Program:
Admission is conditional on the maintenance of good academic standing and an average of at least 65% in each session is required in the program.
