Abstract:

In university STEM courses, there is often a laboratory component that allows students to experiment and explore the concepts taught in their lectures. Unfortunately, most math courses do not have this; that is, there is a lack of experimentation in the teaching and learning of mathematics. How can this gap be filled? In the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at York University, we have an experimental math space, which supports the incorporation of experiments into math courses and their curriculum. This presentation provides insights and examples on integrating experiments into the teaching of mathematics to enhance student learning.

Speaker: Amenda Chow is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at York University. She obtained her PhD at the University of Waterloo, and her Bachelor's and Master's degree were completed at the University of Alberta. All of these degrees were in Applied Mathematics. Shehas been a member of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group since 2017, and her interests lie in the teaching practices of calculus and control theory.
