Archimedes Talks
March 8, 2026
Archimedes Talks is a speaker series aimed at talented high school students in Vancouver interested in mathematics and engineering. Our goal is to provide promising students with opportunities to explore different aspects of math and applied science in an engaging environment. Every session includes two expert speakers and lunch.
Schedule
| 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM | Registration |
| 10:30 - 11:30 AM | Speaker: Alannah Hallas (UBC Physics & Astronomy) Title: Superconductivity: From MRIs to Magnetic Levitation Abstract: Superconductors are materials that can carry electricity with zero resistance, unlocking remarkable possibilities for technology. They already play a critical role in medical imaging through MRI machines and in particle accelerators that probe the fundamental nature of matter. Even more futuristic applications, like frictionless magnetic levitation and lossless power transmission, show the transformative potential of these materials. This talk will explore the science of superconductivity and its journey from discovery to cutting-edge innovations. |
| 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM | Lunch break |
| 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM | Speaker: Colin Macdonald (UBC Mathematics) Title: Interpolation, a witch, and poles in the complex plane Abstract: The approximation of functions is fundamental in mathematics. Polynomial interpolation---such as drawing a straight line segment between two points---is a useful approximation in applications, some of which we'll discuss. Using basic ideas of roots (x-intercepts) of polynomials, we'll look at a beautifully-constructive mathematical proof. Following some computer experiments and a little bit of history, we'll see how studying imaginary numbers can help explain why interpolation works well for some problems, but not for the Witch of Agnesi. |
Registration
Registration will be $20 for the semester.
Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. To apply for a scholarship, please fill out this form.
Directions
Archimedes Talks will be held at the Irving Barber Learning Centre (1961 East Mall) room 261.
Bus Travel
UBC is the terminal stop for many bus routes. The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre is a short walk from the main bus loops.
By Car
The North Parkade is the nearest parking garage, 6115 Student Union Boulevard. This is also a convenient location for dropping students off. Note, however, that parking is not free.
