The mathematics of diffusion and application to biological signaling and movement.

In this talk I will review progress over the last few decades in the application of asymptotic analysis and numerical methodologies to the understanding of diffusive signaling with applications to biological signaling. We will review now classic results on describing the MFPT and narrow escape problem in two and three dimensions. Since then, there has been significant progress in describing the full distribution of arrival statistics of Brownian motion which is important in emerging applications such as extreme statistics.

Alan Lindsay received his PhD from UBC in 2010. He is currently an Associate professor of Applied Mathematics at University of Notre Dame.
