Archimedes Talks
March 2, 2025
Archimedes Talks is a speaker series aimed at high school students in Vancouver who are interested in mathematics and engineering. The goal of these talks is to provide promising students with opportunities to explore different aspects of math and applied science in an engaging environment.
Once a month in February, March, and April, students are invited to the University of British Columbia to hear talks by two expert speakers. Lunch is also provided.
Speaker Schedule:
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM: Gregory Dake, Chemistry
Title: Synthetic Organic Chemist = Molecular Architect and Engineer?
Abstract: Medicines, fragrances, and the building blocks of life are largely made from carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen atoms. How these atoms are stitched together into molecules define what these molecules are and how these molecules behave.
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Sven Bachmann, Mathematics
Title: How to win? Use quantum mechanics!
Abstract: In this talk, we will explore the subtleties of quantum mechanics illustrated by a simple collaborative game. If they play with a good strategy, the players can win 75% of the rounds. That is, if they only use classical physics. If they are however able to handle quantum objects, they can make sure to win 100% of the rounds. We will not only discuss quantum physics, but also some of the mathematics underlying it.
The fee for each talk is $20, which includes lunch.
Scholarships are available for students experiencing financial difficulties. To apply for a scholarship, please fill out this survey.
Archimedes Talks is run by Profs. Seckin Demirbas and Elyse Yeager from the UBC math department.
