Welcome to the home page of the Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia. We invite you to take some time to explore our pages and get a sense of who we are and what we do.

We are located in beautiful and friendly Vancouver, British Columbia. We take pride in accomplishments of our faculty, postdocs and students. We offer a lively program of courses for undergraduates and graduate students, seminars, workshops, social activities and individual contact with faculty that encourages the study of mathematics on all levels. Our faculty are involved in a broad variety of research activities associated with many institutes such as PIMS, the Institute for Applied Mathematics, MITACS and BIRS.

  • Feb 08, 2010: Jimmy Feng has been a warded a UBC Killam Faculty Research Fellowship. More information on our awards page
  • Jan 12, 2010: Many thanks to Prof. David Cheriton, UBC Mathematics alumnus, now Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, for his generous support of the MATH-CWSEI (Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative) program. UBC President Stephen Toope notes, ``His generosity today will help transform basic and applied science education for decades to come.'' Prof. Cheriton heads the Distributed Systems Group at Stanford and is widely credited with helping establish the Internet search giant Google.

  • Dec 4, 2009: Gordon Slade has been awarded the 2010 CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize. Details on our awards page.
  • Nov 24, 2009: Omer Angel has been awarded the 2009-2010 Andre-Aisenstadt Prize. More information on our awards page.
  • Oct 15, 2009: Eldad Haber, jointly appointed in Earth and Ocean Sciences and Mathematics, has been awarded an NSERC Industrial Research Chair (IRC). More information on our awards page.
  • July 2009: At this years Stochastic Processes and Applications meeting in Berlin, UBC was well represented as two of the named plenary lectures, the Doob Lecture and the IMS Medallion Lecture, were given by Ed Perkins and Gordon Slade, respectively.

  • July 2009: Jimmy Feng, Kalle Karu and Nike Vatsal were all awarded NSERC Discovery Accelerator Awards. These highly competitive awards provide substantial and timely resources to outstanding researchers who have a well-established research program and who are at a key point in their careers at which they can make, or capitalize on, a significant breakthrough.   • June 2009: Mathematical Models in Biology, by Leah Keshet, was #3 on the best sellers list over the past year from SIAM books.

  • Jun 04, 2009: David Brydges and Zinovy Reichstein have both accepted invitations to speak at the next International Congress of Mathematicians in 2010 in Hyderabad, India. This is an extremely prestigious honour -- only a handful of mathematicians receive these invitation are invited. The ICM meets only once every four years. The ICM Satellite conference on Algebraic Geometry will also feature Kai Behrend and Patrick Brosnan as plenary speakers.
  • Jun 04, 2009: Melania Alvarez has been nominated for a YWCA Vancouver Woman of Distinction Award, in the category of Education, Training and Development.
