MSRI now accepting applications for its 2005-06 Programs

The Institute invites applications for membership during the 2005-2006 year, which will feature four programs. Information about the types of membership available follow the descriptions of the four programs.

Please apply on-line at: http://www.msri.org/applications/forms/applicants/

NONLINEAR DISPERSIVE EQUATIONS (August 15 to December 16, 2005) The field of nonlinear dispersive equations has evolved over the last fifteen years, enabling work on problems which until recently seemed untouchable. This evolution originates in harmonic analysis, and the analysis of vector fields of the Lorentz group of the linear wave equation. This program will bring together leading experts in these directions. Program Committee: C. Kenig, S. Klainerman, C. Sogge, G. Staffilani, D. Tataru

NONLINEAR ELLIPTIC EQUATIONS AND ITS APPLICATIONS (August 15 to December 16, 2005) This field interacts with other areas of mathematics and other disciplines, such as fluid dynamics, phase transitions, mathematical finance and image processing. Recent developments yield a better understanding of global geometry, Yamabe problem, De Giorgi conjecture and the equations for superconductors. This program will bring together researchers to appraise the current status, and encourage interactions among different points of view. Program Committee: X. Cabré, L. Caffarelli, L.C. Evans, C. Gutiérrez, L. Wang, P. Yang

RATIONAL AND INTEGRAL POINTS ON HIGHER-DIMENSIONAL VARIETIES (January 9 to May 19, 2006) One of the greatest successes of the 20th century has been a qualitative understanding of rational and integral points on curves, through theorems of Mordell, Weil, Siegel, and Faltings. Our focus will be on higher dimensions. This involves complex algebraic geometry, Galois and étale cohomology, transcendence theory and diophantine approximation, harmonic analysis, automorphic forms, and analytic number theory. We will bring together researchers from these fields who are interested in arithmetic applications, as well as specialists in arithmetic geometry. Program Committee: F. Bogomolov, J-L. Colliot-Thélène, B. Poonen, A. Silverberg, Y. Tschinkel

NEW TOPOLOGICAL STRUCTURES IN PHYSICS (January 9 to May 19, 2006) The interplay between quantum field theory and mathematics during the past several decades has led to new concepts of mathematics, which will be explored and developed in this program. This includes: Stringy topology, branes and orbifolds, Generalized McKay correspondences and representation theory and Gromov-Witten theory. Program Committee: R. Cohen, R. Kijksgraaf, P. Horava, A. Klemm, J. Morava, H. Nakajima, Y. Ruan

In addition to these programs, MSRI also continues the COMPLEMENTARY PROGRAM, in which applications from candidates working in any field of mathematics are welcome. Candidates should specify why a fellowship at MSRI at this time is particularly relevant for their research, for example, by describing potential interactions with one of the above fields, or indicating interest in one or more of MSRI’s joint industrial fellow/internships.

Membership Types

MSRI has three award categories available to applicants:

Research Professorships.

These are appointments to senior researchers wishing to spend three or more months at MSRI. Support Provided: The appointments may be made with no support provided, with an award of travel compensation, up to salary compensation which normally will not exceed half the applicant's salary, and up to a ceiling of $25,000. The extent of support needed shall be made in the application form.

MSRI anticipates making between six and ten awards. Some awards are made in areas other than those of the program, so applications from candidates in all fields are welcome.

Application Information: Research Professorships are intended for mathematicians with Ph.D.'s awarded in 1999 or earlier. There is some preference for U.S. applicants.

The application process is to be completed online. Please read the instructions there before completing the form. Candidates must upload several support documents and arrange for those people writing recommendation to upload the letters of recommendation. All applicants must have two letters of support; one of which may be from a member of the program’s organizing committee.

Applications that are incomplete by the deadline are considered only after the complete applications. Awards will be announced by mid-December, 2004. MSRI asks applicants' consideration in not phoning or emailing the Institute regarding the status of their applications during the period October through December 2004.

Application Deadline: Sep. 17, 2004

Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Support Provided: These awards provide support for five months for the four one-semester programs. If appropriate, offers may be made for the entire year. The "Statement of Purpose" is a critical document which must state clearly and specifically the relationship between the applicant's interests and the scientific objectives of the program. A generic "Plans for Future Research" will not suffice.

MSRI expects semester Postdoctoral Fellows to be in residence for five months. The application must address these issues: the scientific basis of a postdoctoral fellowship at MSRI; the duration of the fellowship sought, and what other support is anticipated for the year. MSRI may make several fellowship/intern awards together with Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft Research; these may be full-year awards. Applicants interested in these particular positions must so indicate, and discuss their own scientific interests in this context. The fellowship stipend is $4,000 per month, with an award for round-trip travel. Some awards may be made in non-programmatic areas, so applicants from candidates in all fields are welcome.

Application Information: Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for mathematicians with Ph.D.s awarded in 2000 or later. Some preference will be given to U.S. applicants. Preference is given to candidates applying to participate in a particular topical program, or candidates with some other specific scientific interest in being at MSRI.

Application Deadline: Nov. 12, 2004

General Memberships.

This category is for mathematicians holding a Ph.D. who stay for at least a month, and who will not receive salary reimbursement. Usually general members are connected with one of the programs, but applications from all areas are welcome.

Support Provided: These awards may provide partial expenses up to $88/day, and may offer travel expense reimbursement. It is expected that general members will come with partial or full support from other sources. Awards in this category are normally limited to expenses for a relatively short period (e.g., one to three months).

Application Information: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. Some preference will be given to U.S. applicants.
