Fine Detail of the Spectra of Large Toeplitz Matrices

Consider a sequence of Toeplitz matrices of increasing dimension and the same symbol. Sequences of this nature arise in hydrocarbon chemistry and we have been working for nearly a decade with a team of theoretical chemists on problems that reduce to understanding the asymptotic nature on the spectra of such sequences. At first, the flow of technique was from analysis to chemistry, but recently an idea from our chemistry project has resulted in valuable new results about the fine detail of the spectra of large Toeplitz matrices. This talk is an advertisement for interdisciplinary work.
