Colloquium Abstract: Dr. Gregory Reid, Okanagan College and UBC

Computer graphics and visualizations will be used to help informally introduce concepts from the geometry of partial differential equations.

Computer implementations of such (Jet space) methods and connections with numerical solution methods will also be discussed. In particular we present a geometric way to calculate Gear's index of numerical difficulty of solving systems of ODEs with constraints (e.g. the Pendulum). We also mention possibilities of generalizations to systems of PDEs with constraints (e.g. the Navier Stokes Equations and Einstein's Field Equations).

*Coffee, tea and cookies will be served in Math Lounge (Annex) Room 1115
