Averaging for Hamilton-Jacobi PDE

In this talk I will discuss some old methods of Lions-Papanicolaou- Varadhan for homogenizing Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equations, building thereby an "effective" Hamiltonian. I will then describe some new and ongoing research (with D. Gomes) as to the physical meaning of this effective Hamiltonian, and its consequences for Hamiltonian ODE.

Refreshments will be served in Math Annex Room 1115, 3:15 p.m.
