Number representation and symbolic dynamics

Abstract: In this talk we will focus on the properties of the symbolic dynamical systems arising from the representation of numbers in a given base \beta. We will be particularly interested in the case where the representation of a given number is not unique: - \beta=2 and digits -1, 0 and 1; - \beta>1 is not an integer. We will present old and new results on the properties of the so-called \beta -shift.

Refreshments will be served at 2:45 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, Math Annex (Room 1115).
