Defect dynamics near bubbles and drops rising in a liquid crystal: observations and computations

Abstract: In this lecture, I describe experimental observations and numerical simulations of orientational defects surrounding bubbles and drops in nematic liquid crystals. I will describe a mathematical model that captures the coupling among bulk molecular orientation, surface anchoring, interfacial morphology and external flow fields. This is used in finite-element computations of the dynamics of the defects. Results show a flow-induced transition from the so-called Saturn ring defect to a satellite point defect, in close agreement with observations.

Refreshments will be served at 2:45 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, Math Annex (Room 1115).
