Math 220, January-April 2020

Math 220
in Winter term 2 of 2019-2020.
For specific information relative to your section (e.g.

hours) please refer to the information given by your instructor. below.

Book of Proof (3nd edition), by R. Hammack. The 2nd edition works too.
You may purchase a physical
copy of this book at the bookstore, or you may access and download
the
book for free at the author's
web page. The sections we will cover can be found in the syllabus
link below.
- Syllabus
- Exams: All tests
will be
closed book-closed notes tests. Calculators will not be allowed. You'll
find here the dates of the tests as well as some review material.
- Past exams
- Midterm: (45 minutes) February 12 in class for Sections
203 and 204.
February 13 in class for Sections 201 and 202 (exam from 11 to
11:45am, then class as usual until 12:20pm).

As anounced in class, the material to review is everything on the
syllabus until Chapter 9 included.
Here is a midterm
for your curiosity (there was an induction question but you won't be
tested on induction).
This is just an example so you have an idea of the general structure of
the exam. But the best way to review is to review your assignments
(read the solutions even when you believe your answer was correct), and
review your coursenotes and examples covered in class.
Julia also added to her
webpage some notes and problems ("Review materials for
midterm").
- Final Exam: it will be an online exam. It will take
place on Monday April 20 at 8:30am. Here is a sample final with
solutions.
- Breakdown
of marks: Homework 15%, Midterm 25%, Final exam 60%.

be posted here.
There will be one assignment posted per week (unless otherwise
specified), each due on the following week. For specifics about
how/where to turn in our homework, please refer to the
information given by your instructor.
Questions about the HW may be addressed to either your instructor or
your TA.
This class is about learning the language of
mathematics, so to earn full marks you will need to write your answers
in a logical sequence that is easy to follow and confirm. Your proofs
will probably contain more words than mathematical symbols.
Papers that are not cleanly written, not easy to read, and/or not
stapled properly may
not be graded and may therefore receive the zero mark.
