Dr. Deanna Needell Featured in The Globe and Mail
UBC Mathematics Professor, Dr. Deanna Needell, recently shared her perspective with The Globe and Mail on AI safety and the important role of human judgment in mathematics.
Dr. Needell’s research lies at the intersection of applied mathematics and data science, with a focus on developing efficient algorithms and theoretical frameworks for real-world problems. Her work explores the mathematical foundations of modern machine learning and artificial intelligence, addressing fundamental questions about why neural networks and other learning algorithms work so well in practice. This includes studying phenomena such as benign overfitting, in which models can fit training data perfectly while still generalizing effectively to new data.
