Dr. Christoph Ortner Appointed Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematics (IAM)

Dr. Ortner has been a member of the IAM since he joined UBC in 2020. He was previously a professor at the University of Warwick's Mathematics Institute (2011–2020), and before that an RCUK Academic Fellow at the University of Oxford (2007-2011).
Dr. Ortner's work focuses on the mathematical foundations of molecular and multiscale modelling. His research combines mathematical analysis with algorithm design and scientific applications. His recent work develops geometric deep learning methods for molecular simulation, in collaboration with researchers across physics, chemistry, and materials science.
As Director, Dr. Ortner aims to strengthen the IAM's role as a hub connecting mathematics with the physical sciences, and in particular to clarify the place of mathematics as artificial intelligence reshapes scientific research.
