The instructor for the course is me, Ben Williams

This is an undergraduate introduction to topology, the aim of which is to introduce topological spaces, continuous functions, the fundamental group and covering spaces.

Because of the measures put in place by UBC to cope with the current COVID-19 public health crisis, the class meets entirely online. A Zoom link will be made available to registered students.

This course does not have a set textbook. Instead, course notes are available. These notes will be updated as the term progresses.

For a number of years, this course had Topology, 2nd Edition by Munkres as a textbook. It covers a lot of what this course will cover.

Other books that cover some of the material of this course include

- General Topology by John L. Kelley
- Introduction to Topology by Burt Mendelson
- Algebraic Topology by Alan Hatcher. This book is freely available online. Chapter 1 covers the material on the fundamental group and covering spaces. It is quite advanced compared to Munkres.

The book Counterexamples in Topology by Lynn Steen and J. Arthur Steenbach is also relevant to the course and is often amusing.

This course involves some elementary category theory. Here are some references for that material:

- Conceptual Mathematics by F. Williams Lawvere and Stephen H. Schanuel.
- Selected chapters of Algebra by Serge Lang contain a gentle introduction to category theory. The emphasis there is on algebraic categories.
- The book Categories for the Working Mathematician by Saunders Mac Lane is a standard reference.

Grades will be composed of 70% homework score and 30% final exam score.
