Course Outline
Grading
Grading will be based on
  • Homeworks: 10%
  • Two Midterm Exams: 20% each
  • Final Exam: 50%
and the final mark may be scaled.
Homeworks
Homework is due at the beginning of Friday lecture each week. A subset of the assigned problems will be selected for grading, and the mark will be assigned from those (you should still do all of the suggested problems!) Late homeworks will not be accepted. Please staple all of your sheets, and write your name in pen on each sheet you turn in. The grades for the worst two homework problem sets will be discarded at the end of the course. Please check the website here as I will post each weekly assignment.
Exams
There will be two in-class midterms scheduled for Monday, February 4th and Friday, March 15th. The final exam will be announced at a later date, do not schedule any other commitments during the exam period. The final will be common among all sections. No books, notes, or calculators will be allowed during any exams.
Notes
I will try to post outlines of lecture notes at least one day before each lecture here. Please print out and bring these notes to class so you can follow along. I will also be posting any supplementary material in the same section.
Policies
Missing a midterm or an assignment will normally result in a mark of zero. Exceptions may be granted in two cases: prior consent of the instructor or a medical emergency. In the latter case, the instructor must be notified as soon as possible (preferably before the test), and presented with a doctor's note immediately upon the student's return to UBC. When an exception is granted for a missed test, there will be no make-up test, instead the remaining midterm/assignments will be used to calculate the Term mark.
Add/drop
Please be aware that Instructors in Math courses cannot handle registration for classes. Please see the website on Registration Issues or drop by the Math department office (Room 121) if you have any questions.
