THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Department of Mathematics MEMORANDUM Telephone: 604-822-6532 Fax: 604-822-6074 To: Graduate Course Instructors From: Graduate Affairs Committee Date: November 1999 _____________________________________________________________________________ GUIDELINES: FINAL MARKS FOR 500 LEVEL MATHEMATICS GRADUATE COURSES Please consider the following when assigning grades in your graduate course(s). It is highly desirable that the department have consistent grading practices so that we can identify both weak and strong students. • Any grade below 68% has academic consequences for the student. If you wish to send a strong unequivocal message that the student should not continue at graduate school, give a grade below 55%. The passing grade is 60% for Master's students, and 68% for Ph.D. students. Two failing grades will normally require the student to withdraw from the program. Other restrictions are explained in the calendar. • A grade of 68% to 79% gives the student credit but indicates work below our expectations for graduate students in Mathematics. Further courses in the area would require remedial work. • An 'A-' grade (80% to 84%) indicates satisfactory work but does not encourage the student to consider this area for research at this stage. • An 'A' grade (85% to 89%) identifies good work. The student is encouraged to take follow-up courses or perhaps do research in the area. • An 'A+' grade (90 - 100%) identifies outstanding work. The student is encouraged to pursue research in this area. LK/hd G/S: MARKS:final marks 99
