Math 422/501
Algebra
Time: MWF 2:00-2:50
Place: Math 102
Texts:
No required text although I may follow Rotman "Advanced Modern Algebra" and/or Milne's online notes on group theory and Galois theory.
Course Outline: I expect that everyone has had an introductory
undergraduate course (or possibly two) on groups, rings, and
fields. Our goal is to reexamine these topics in more depth with more
sophistication. There will homework, probably every two weeks and
there will be one in-class midterm. There will be a written
final. The written exams will have questions which would be typical
for questions from the graduate qualifying exam. Students are
encouraged to work in groups on homework, but it is manditory that
each student does their own write-ups. The grades will be 50%
homework, and 50% midterm and final.
The basic topics are groups, followed by commutative rings, followed by fields and Galois theory.
