You may save your assignment as a Maple (.mw) file and
email it as an attachment to
math210@ugrad.math.ubc.ca
by 11:59 pm of the due date, or print it on paper and hand it to me
by 3:00 pm of the due date. Please do not email it to
israel@math.ubc.ca.
On Monday January 3 I sent everyone registered for the
course a
promotional code for purchasing Maple 14 from the
Maplesoft web store. If you didn't get that email,
please email me.
Midterm
dates: Feb. 8,
Mar. 22
All paper and electronic references are allowed in the
midterms and final exam.
The first midterm covers everything up to and including
the section "Three equations in three variables" in Lesson 12.
The average on the first midterm was 25.73 out of 40. The median was 27.
The second midterm covers everything (from the beginning) up to and including
the section "Integration using series" in Lesson 26.
There was a problem with the mail spooler on Tuesday, March 15, which caused
some people submitting homework to get messages saying their email had not been delivered.
This has now been fixed. If the TA didn't send you an email asking you to resend your
homework, it did finally get through.
Final exam: Monday April 18, 8:30 - 11:00.
Please check your exam schedule at the
Student Service Centre.
In case of a conflict or a hardship (three exams within a 24 hour period, with ours as the middle one),
please email me as soon as possible.
The Mathematics Department will hold an information session for

Lecture Notes
The Maple worksheets can be accessed in several ways. To
download them to your computer:
Right-click on the link in your web browser
Choose "Save Target As" (Internet Explorer) or
"Save Link As" (Mozilla Firefox)
Click on the
downloaded file to open it in Maple.
To have Maple get the file from the web:
Right-click on the link in your web browser
Choose "Copy Shortcut" (Internet Explorer) or
"Copy Link Location" (Mozilla Firefox)
In Maple, choose File, Open URL
Press the Shift and Insert keys together (or Ctrl and V) to
paste the address
Click Open.
The PDF files can be opened and viewed within your web browser
(without Maple) if you have installed Adobe Reader. You can
download Adobe Reader for free from the Adobe web site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html
The lab in LSK 310 should be open and available on a drop-in basis
weekdays 7:30 am to 5 pm except when it is in use by particular
courses (including ours):
Transferring files
There are two ways of transferring worksheet files between the
lab and
your home computer.
If you have a web-based email account (e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo
or Gmail), you can send yourself an email with the worksheet
as an attachment. If you don't have one already, you can
get one of those email accounts for free.
You can buy a USB flash drive that fits on a
keychain, and put the file on it.
Crash prevention
It's very easy to cause Maple to use up all available memory and crash the
computer. As memory is used up and the system starts using virtual
memory, everything slows down to a crawl. Sometimes it may be difficult to
recover from such a situation
(especially on exams!). To prevent this, you can limit the amount of memory
available to Maple. A limit of 100 MB should be reasonable for anything we
will be doing.
To do this on a Windows system, right-click on the Maple 14 icon and choose
Properties. Under Shortcut, after
"C:\Program Files\Maple 14\bin.win\maplew.exe" enter
-T infinity,100000
Then click OK. After this change has been made, if Maple tries to use
more than 100 MB of memory it should fail gracefully enough that you can save
your worksheet and start again. Note, however, that this only affects a Maple
session started by clicking on that Maple 14 icon, not e.g. by clicking on a
worksheet file icon.
