Quiz Policies

Academic Honesty

During the quiz, you will not use any form of calculator or phone. You will not speak to your classmates, look at their papers, or display your paper for another to see. If someone is taking the quiz after you, you will not let them know anything about the material in the quiz that is not publicly available information.

Regrading

If you think there has been a mistake in the grading of your quiz, write a note explaining the issue, staple it to your quiz (do not just bend the corner), and give it to me in class or in my office no more than ONE WEEK after your quiz was returned to you. Do not alter the quiz paper itself in any way except to staple your explanation to it. I will reevaluate the grading, taking into consideration your letter. Your grade may go up or down. In particular, if your letter demonstrates a lack of understanding, this may cause your grade to be lowered.

Schedule

Weeks without a midterm: Thursday/Friday: take the quiz
Weeks with a midterm: Monday/Tuesday: take the quiz
Weekend: submit one revised problem (optional)
Monday: Screencasts with grading instructions will go up on Connect
by Thursday afternoon: submit grades of your peers' revised problems

Missing Quizzes

Out policies will be similar to the policies for missing midterms, given on the main course webpage: If a student misses a quiz, that student shall provide a documented excuse or a mark of zero will be entered for that quiz. Examples of valid excuses are an illness which has been documented by a physician or Student Health Services, or an absence to play a varsity sport (your coach will provide you with a letter).
There will be no make-up quizzes. If you provide a valid, documented excuse, your quiz grade will be excused and its weight transferred to your other quizzes. To be eligible for this arrangement, you must notify your instructor of your failure to take the test within a week of the missed quiz, and come up with a timeline acceptable to both for producing appropriate documentation for your absence.

Revision Policy

Revisions

Directly after the last section takes the quiz, you will have the option to revise one and only one question of your choosing. Submit your revised question on TurnItIn by the end of the weekend. Note: you will have to submit a revision before you get your quiz back. This is to encourage you to engage with the material!

Grading

The revised problems will be peer-graded, ideally by three of your classmates, according to a rubric. The rubric will be posted on Connect, along with screencasts explaining it. Your grade will be the average of these three scores. If you attempt to answer more than one question, you will receive no credit. Your score on the revised problem will replace your score on that problem on your quiz, whether it is higher or lower.
After the peer-reviewed grades have been distributed, you will have one week to dispute them. If you wish to dispute a peer grade, print out the relevant pages from TurnItin, write a letter to your instructor explaining the problem, and give it to her in class, or in her office.
Peer grading only works if you play along. In order to receive any credit for your revised problem, you must adequately grade your peers' submissions. Adequacy will be determined by your instructor. Your grading should by finished by Thursday afternoon.

Academic Honesty

After you take your quiz, you are free to talk to others about it (EXCEPT people who will be taking the quiz later). In order to revise a problem, you are welcome to consult friends, the internet, books, etc. However, the final problem you submit must be your own work. You may not copy and paste someone else's, and you may not copy word-for-word from any source. Think of it like a research paper: you can (and should) learn from others' ideas, but you can't copy them directly.

Changes to these Policies

The ability to submit revisions is a bit of an experiment! I've tried to think out what the most useful policies are pedagogically, but I might need to tweak them. I'll try not to, but I'll let you know in class if I do.
