Math 110, Section 003

Previous Announcements

April 2
  • Remember that there are still workshops this week.
March 22
  • This week's homework assignment has been posted. This is the last assignment of the term. The written portion is here and is due next Thursday as usual on Tuesday, April 2. The WeBWorK assignment will not be due until the last day of classes.
March 15
  • The written assignment for next week has been posted here. The current version was posted at 3:30 today; if you printed it out before then, double check to make sure you have the right copy. Note that for this assignment you will need to look up some extra information (dimensions of the Great Pyramid, the UBC clock tower) in order to solve the questions.
  • WeBWork has also been posted - all 15 questions are due next Thursday, as usual.
March 12
  • For those who didn't receive the handout of related rates problems in class today, it's been posted below under lecture notes, or look at it here.
March 8
  • This week's homework has been posted on WeBWorK and the written part is here.
  • Note that the written part looks long, but each question is fairly short, so it shouldn't be too time-consuming.
  • For this week's WeBWorK, you will receive 5 marks for finishing the assignment from last week (2.6) and the other assignment, 2.7 is due this upcoming Thursday as usual.
March 7
  • The animations on desmos from today's class are here and here.
  • I discovered the answer key for our textbook online. You can download it from this website.
March 6
  • There's been a change to this week's WeBWorK: you need only complete 10 of the 15 questions by this Thursday (March 7). The remaining 5 will need to be completed by next week (March 14).
  • If you complete more than 10 questions for this Thursday, these will count both as bonus marks for this week and as credit for next week.
March 1
  • The next assignment has been posted on WeBWorK and the written part is here. Note that optimization problems can be time-consuming to set up, so starting early would be a good idea. I also highly encourage you to do the extra problems at some point in the next two weeks.
Feburary 26
  • The optional assignment for some homework bonus marks is here.
  • Email me (or come to office hours and ask) any questions you have about ex.

Midterm Resources
  • I've posted the outline from the review session here, with answers included here.
  • The Course Goals page lists all topics we've covered this term and some review questions for term 1 and 2.
  • For more practice, look at the ExtraProblems sets on WeBWorK.
  • Exam questions on the Math Exam Resources wiki, particularly questions 1a-c and 9 (although the other questions might be a good review as well!) from the 2011 exam and questions 1a, 3c, and 9a-f from the 2010 exam.
  • Recall that this midterm will contain one question from the December exam, as well as a question based on the workshops. The question from the December exam will be from the common part of the exam, which consists of the first 8 questions.
  • Old exams on Fok's page here, here, and here. Note that because the syllabus for this course has been slightly different every year, it might be more helpful to look at previous year's December exam instead of their second midterm.
February 7
  • If you have a class conflict with the midterm time, email me by FRIDAY EVENING, otherwise you will not be on the list for an alternate sitting and will not be able to take it at that time.
  • No homework or workshops next week.
  • My office hours next week will be as follows: Monday I will be in my office (see my front page for the location and a map) from around 8:30 - 1, feel free to drop by any time with specific questions about problems that you're working on. January 9
  • I've added a morning office hour on Wednesday from 9 - 10:30. See above for the now complete list of times and locations for office hours. For both Wednesday office hours, I'm willing to stay for a little extra time if people are still there when the office hour is officially over.
January 4
  • The first homework assignment has been posted on WebWork and here.
  • Note that there are two sets on WeBWorK. The one entitled ''assignment2.1'' is required, the set entitled ''extraproblems2.1'' is optional.

  • Please bring something to write with and your student ID card. No calculators will be allowed.
  • There will be one question from the midterm on the December exam. There will also be one question relating to one of the workshops.
  • Resources for studying:
    • Math Exam Resources wiki - this site has copies of previous exams with hints and worked out solutions. You can also try
      • questions 1a, 1b, 1d, 1e, 1f, 1j, 1k, 1n, and 8 on the December 2011 Math 100 exam
      • questions 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1f, 1l, 2a, and 2b on the December 2011 Math 104 exam.
    • Copies of previous exams (without solutions) are also available on Head Instructor Fok-Shuen Leung's website: 2009, 2010, 2011
    • All material we have have covered and you can be expected to know is outlined on this page.
    • A WeBWorK review set has been posted. Note that all previous workshops, written assignments, written assignment solutions, and slides from class are posted below.
    • I will hold two extra office hours, on Monday, December 3, from 2:00-3:30 PM and Tuesday, December 4, at from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM. Both will be in LSK 300C
November 22
  • No assignment or workhops next week. I will have my usual office hours if people have questions about the Precalculus problem set or early review questions.
  • Please recall that Problem 51 on the precalculus set is defective - you do not need to complete it.
  • For information on the December exam, see below.
November 17
  • I've changed the second question on the written homework - the new copy is here and is labeled version 2.
November 15
  • Assignment 10 (or 1.12) has been posted on WeBWorK and here. This is the last homework of the term.
  • Remember that for those who didn't pass the in-class skills test, the precalculus WeBWorK set is due at the beginning of December. You don't need to complete question 51 - there seems to be an error in the answer.
  • The WeBWorK set Resources Survey has a link to a survey researching math education at UBC. It is due next Tuesday, the 20th, and there will be a dropped homework score if you complete it.
November 9
  • This week's homework has been posted here and on WeBWorK.
  • A reminder to those of you who are required to complete the precalculus practice set on WeBWorK - by this point you should be at least halfway through the set or close to finishing.
November 1
  • This week's homework has been posted here and on WeBWorK.
  • I highly recommend doing some extra problems computing derivatives using the product and quotient rule - any of the practice problems in sections 3.1-3.4 of our text would be good. I can provide solutions upon request.
October 30
  • The link for UBC's job action page is here and the link to the TA union (CUPE 2278) website is here. Both sites have an FAQ for undergraduate students; the CUPE 2278 site also has general info about what the job action hopes to achieve and so on.
  • You should assume that everything (class, workshop) will happen as usual unless you get an email from me. Because it takes a day or two to schedule the next stage of job action, if for some reason class or workshop is canceled, you will likely find out at least the night before.
  • Note that if you choose to not cross a picket line and thus may have to miss class or a workshop, you must notify the dean of your faculty by October 31st at 3:00 PM.
  • If you have any questions, email me and I will either answer your question or send it to someone who can.
October 26

  • I've modified my office hours slightly - see the top of this page for my current office hour times and locations.
  • Workshops will resume next week.
  • Homework assignments through 1.5 (the fourth assignment) are available for pickup in the filing cabinet at the top of the central staircase in the math building.
October 15
  • Past midterm exams are available on head instructor Fok-Shuen Leung's website, here, here, and here. Because the course outline has changed, there will be some material on these previous midterms that we haven't covered yet. If you don't recongnize a concept (like continuity), skip the question.
  • There are a few errors in the solutions for my posted review questions; see the course goals page for details.
October 12
  • I have posted a set of review questions for the midterm on the Course Goals page. I will post hints later today and solutions on Saturday or Sunday. As the disclaimer on the questions says - this should not be the only thing you study. You also have your notes, old WebWorK questions, posted solutions to the written homework, etc. etc.
  • Next week I will have my normal Monday/Tuesday office hours, as well as an additional review session from 5-6:30 on Monday in MATH 103.
