Dr. Ping-Tung Chang was recognised by the Alaskan Legislature for his contributions to the State of Alaska, and for his achievements. Wednesday, November 29, 1999, Representative Vie Kohring presented Dr. Chang with a legislative citation. The legislature applauded Dr. Chang for endowing his students with enthusiasm for learning mathematics, spending free hours tutoring students at no charge, and for creating peer study groups to expand the availability of ready help with mathematics to struggling students.

In addition, the Mat-Su College Math Club, sponsored by Dr. Chang, created a math resource library and learning lab for students at the college and other members of the community. The lab features five computers, donated by Unocal, on which are loaded mathematics tutorials and other applications dealing with mathematics and engineering. Various text books and learning materials are available to students, and tutors are on hand to aid them in understanding their coursework.

Finally, Allen Reese, a member of the math club, was awarded a UAA Undergraduate Research Grant to build a portable engine he designed. Once built, the engine should be able to provided a greater amount of power at less expense than most portable generators now on the market, and should greatly aid low-income residents of rural areas where electricity is not readily available.

We are proud to announce that Jennifer Firkins, a student of Frank Anderson's at the University of Oregon, will be joining our faculty as an assistant professor of mathematics.

Due to several retirements last year, we have been able to hire new faculty. We are pleased to announce that Arkady Berenstein, Claudi Polini, and Arkady Vaintrob have accepted appointments for next year; and we hope to hire one more person this year. Berenstein's interests include representation theory, quantum groups and combinatorics. Polini's speciality is commutative algebra; her other interests include algebraic geometry, computational algebra and homological algebra. Vaintrob's areas are algebraic geometry, differential geometry, Lie theory and representation theory, low-dimensional topology, and mathematical physics.

Our chairman, Gary Seitz, has been awarded one of three College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professorships. There are Distinguished Professorships for Science, for Social Science, and for Humanities. As part of the award, he will be giving a lecture on April 18 at 4:00 p.m.

Frank Anderson organized the traditional Oregon Dinner at the national mathematics meeting in Washington, DC, in January. Ex-University of Oregon folks from the Pacific Northwest included Michael Boardman and Christine Guenther of Pacific University, Laurie Burton and James D, Harper of Central Washington University, and Robin Cruz of Albertson College.

Peter and Neil Gray, co-authors of THE MATH-SCIENCE ADVENTURE SERIES; have had their books listed with the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education (ENC). Peter and Neil wrote five books of hands-on lesson plans for elementary teachers in 1996. The Clearinghouse told them in January, 2000 that "These titles have been chosen after receiving an excellent review in Teaching Children Mathematics," a magazine published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

The ENC is located at Ohio State University, and provides teachers, parents and students with a web site, http://www.enc.org to view educational materials in math and science. The books will be on their site in the Spring. They may be viewed now at http://www.pacificrim.net/-math
