In addition, the Mat-Su College Math Club, sponsored by Dr. Chang, created a math resource library and learning lab for students at the college and other members of the community. The lab features five computers, donated by Unocal, on which are loaded mathematics tutorials and other applications dealing with mathematics and engineering. Various text books and learning materials are available to students, and tutors are on hand to aid them in understanding their coursework.
Finally, Allen Reese, a member of the math club, was awarded a UAA Undergraduate Research Grant to build a portable engine he designed. Once built, the engine should be able to provided a greater amount of power at less expense than most portable generators now on the market, and should greatly aid low-income residents of rural areas where electricity is not readily available.
We are proud to announce that Jennifer Firkins, a student of Frank Anderson's at the University of Oregon, will be joining our faculty as an assistant professor of mathematics.
Our chairman, Gary Seitz, has been awarded one of three College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professorships. There are Distinguished Professorships for Science, for Social Science, and for Humanities. As part of the award, he will be giving a lecture on April 18 at 4:00 p.m.
Frank Anderson organized the traditional Oregon Dinner at the national mathematics meeting in Washington, DC, in January. Ex-University of Oregon folks from the Pacific Northwest included Michael Boardman and Christine Guenther of Pacific University, Laurie Burton and James D, Harper of Central Washington University, and Robin Cruz of Albertson College.
