IPAM Electronic Newsletter
e-IPAM-Fall 2006

The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) invites you to scroll through its Fall 2006 newsletter. The programs and workshops described below should appeal to the interests and needs of a broad range of researchers and are designed to foster interdisciplinary research between mathematicians and scientists and scholars working in other disciplines. We encourage you to visit our website at http://www.ipam.ucla.edu for more information on individual programs and events. If you are interested in proposing either a 3-month or short program at IPAM, please visit http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/programs/proposals.aspx or contact the Director, Mark Green.

IPAM Semester Programs:

Each IPAM long program will involve a community of senior and junior researchers. The intent is for long-term participants to have an opportunity to learn about the topic of the program from the perspectives of many different fields and to meet a diverse group of people and have an opportunity to form new collaborations. In addition to these activities, there will be opening tutorials, four workshops (each one is listed under "upcoming workshops"), and a culminating workshop at Lake Arrowhead. Funding is available both to attend our entire 3-month program and to attend individual workshops; those interested are encouraged to apply through the website of the program that interests them.

2007 Summer Programs

Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS): June 24 - August 24, 2007 Please refer exceptional undergraduate students of mathematics, engineering, computer science, and physical and life science disciplines to http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/programs/rips2007/ for information on this unique summer program. Last year's project sponsors included Arete, Symantec, Hewlett-Packard, Pixar, JPL, Lawrence-Livermore and Los Alamos National Labs, NASA Goddard, and TimeLogic. Students will be in-residence at UCLA for nine weeks.

**A RIPS program in Beijing, China, in collaboration with Microsoft Research Asia, will run concurrently. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may apply through IPAM (Chinese nationals may apply through MSRA). Students indicate their interest in the Beijing program on the RIPS application.**

Juniors and graduating seniors are especially encouraged to apply. The selection process is highly competitive. An application will be available online and are due February 15.
