Midterms

There will be two midterms held in class.

Midterm 1 Feb. 3 (Wed.). Will cover sections 5.1 to 6.5 in syllabus.
Midterm 2 Mar. 24 (Wed.) Will cover up to and including Week 9 in the syllabus with emphasis on the topics covered since the last midterm.

There are old midterms that can be found on the web by googling for them. These can be useful for practice. This midterm by Mark Maclean is one that helped me to write our exam.

Here are some practice problems for midterm 1 that we looked at in class.

And here are some practice midterms for midterm 2.

Weekly assessments and homework

Suggested weekly homework assignments are posted on the common homework page for Math 101 at UBC at the following URL: http://www.math.ubc.ca/~gupta/m101_common/homework.html.

Quizzes and 2/3 of the final exam will be based on these weekly homework assignments taken from the text. So doing the suggested homework assignments is absolutely essential to success in the course. Answers to the odd numbered problems are in the back of the book and solutions are in the Student Solutions Maunual .

For most weeks there will be some assessment of your progress on the homework. This will be either a short quiz based on the homework or an assignment to turn in some of assigned homework for a grade. Here is a table of quiz and homework due dates. If homework is due on a date, the table will indicate which problems are to be turned in. When I make your final grade, I will drop your worst two of the weekly assessments. So I will drop either two quizzes, a homework and a quiz or two homeworks. There will be no makeups on quizzes and/or homework.

Grade Percentages

Final grades will be computed approximately as follow

Final: 50%
Midterms: 35%
Quizzes: 10%
Homework: 5%

The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped.

Note that the final average for the class is determined by how well our section does on the final compared with the other sections. Because of this, I cannot give a precise figure for how your final grade will be determined. The above is therefore an approximation.
