Grading Scheme
- Final exam = 50%
- Midterms = 40% (two @ 20% each)
- Quizzes = 10% (eight @ 1.25% each)
Please note
- The questions for the Midterms and quizzes will be roughly based on the homework questions
Homework
- Please find suggested weekly homework problems on the common homework website
- The weeks refer to the weeks of classes
- I will do my best to keep to this schedule --- but it is possible that we will be out of slightly sync from time to time.
- Homework will not be collected, however the quizzes will be based on these problems.
- There are good extra homework problems on Mark MacLean's section website. I strongly suggest that you have a go at them.
Midterm Dates
- There will be two 50 minute Midterms held during class hours.
- Friday February 9
- Friday March 23
Quiz Dates
- There are a total of 8 quizzes.
- 20 minute quizzes will be given each Friday, excepting if there is a Midterm or a holiday.
- They will cover (approximately) the work from the previous week

- There is a Midterm on the 9th.
- There are no lectures from the 19th until the 23rd due to midterm break.
- March:
- 2nd, 9th, 16th and 30th.
- There is a Midterm on the 23rd.
- April:
- No quizzes.
- Friday 6th and Monday 9th are holidays.
- Last lecture is Wednesday 11th.
Calculators and formula sheets
- Unless otherwise stated, no calculators and no formula sheets will be allowed for the exam, the midterms and quizzes.
Missed Quizzes or Midterms
- If a quiz is missed for a documented medical or other reason, it will be ignored, with other quizzes reweighted to compensate for the missed quiz.
- In the case of a missed midterm, permission to write a makeup midterm or reweighting of other course components may be granted in the following two circumstances:
- (a) prior notice of a valid, documented absence (e.g. out-of-town varsity athletic commitment) on the scheduled date; or
- (b) notification to the instructor within 72 hours of absence due to medical condition. Original written documentation, for example a doctor’s note or letter from a coach, is required in all cases;
- otherwise a score of 0 will be assigned for the missed quiz or midterm.

Solutions to quizzes and midterms
Practice midterms
- You can find some practice midterm papers here.
- Please note that the topics covered in these practice papers might not match exactly those we have covered to date.
- More precisely our first midterm will cover the topics in Homeworks 1 through 4. There are questions on the first of these practice midterms from Homework 5 - these will not be on our first midterm.
Integration guide
- A short integration guide can be found here.
- It is not supposed to be printed out --- just view it in a pdf-viewer.
Notes on the integral comparison test
- A short set of notes on the integral comparison test can be found here.
- This covers material from pages 536 and 537 of the textbook.
