Office Hours: 10:00-11:00 am. on Monday and 5:00--6:00 pm. on Wednesday & Friday

Textbook: The textbook for this course is Multivariable Calculus 7E by J. Stewart. You also can use Calculus 7E Early Transcendentals by J.Stewart.

Math200 Common Page: A detailed syllabus and a list of suggested problems are posted on the common Math200 page:

Exams and Grades: There will be a common final exam for all sections of Math 200. The Final Exam (2.5 hours) will be held in December. Calculators, books, notes and formula sheets are not allowed in any exams. This is a 3-credit course with a maximum grade of 100. There will be four 50-minute Term Exams The dates of the four 50-minute Term Exams are asfollows:

Term Exam 1: September 20 (Thursday),

Term Exam 2: October 11 (Thursday),

Term Exam 3: November 1 (Thursday),

Term Exam 4: November 15 (Thursday).

The average of the 4 Term Exams, which is the Term Mark, will count for 50% of the course grade. Accommodation for absence due to illness requires documentation. No make-up term exams will be given. The Final Exam will count for 50% of the grades. The instructor reserves the right to revise or round off gradeds if circumstances warrant. In order to make course grade standards consistent across sections the raw final grade will be scaled.

Course Outline: This is an introduction to calculus of several variables. The main topics are partial derivatives and multiple integrals. An appreciation of three-dimensional geometry is essential. Section numbers refer to Stewart, Calculus 7E Early Transcendentals.

1. Vectors, quadratic surfaces (Sections 12.1-12.6) and conic sections (Section 10.5)

2. Partial derivatives, increments, chain rule (Sections 14.1, 14.3-14.5)

3. Directional derivative and Gradients (Section 14.6)

4. Max/min, Lagrange multipliers (Sections 14.7, 14.8)

5. Double integrals (Sections 15.1-15.5)

6. Triple integrals (Sections 15.7-15.9)

Considerate Behavior and Cheating: Talking in class is disruptive to others trying to concentrate on the lecture. Violators may be asked to sit separately or leave the class. Cheating on tests will not be tolerated. Any cheating will immediately be reported to the head of the Mathematics Department for disciplinary action. Cheaters are often caught and the usual punishment is a 0 in the course, expulsion from the University for 1 year, no transferability for courses taken at another institution while under suspension and a notation on your transcript of the suspension due to cheating. Finally, it is considered inappropriate in any course to bring friends or other students not registered in the course into the lectures without first obtaining permission of the instructor.
