Question: How should I dispose/recycle computers and other electronic waste?
Author: Joseph Tam
Date: May 21, 2013

Please don't heave it into the garbage bins as computer hardware contain toxic materials that could leach its way into the environment.

If you can't turn it into a paperweight/artwork, nor give it away to a needy, starving student, may I suggest letting UBC Waste Management recycle it. They will accept personal E-waste (PCs, monitors, cell phones, electronics, etc.) from the UBC community (faculty, staff, student) at periodic intervals. See their web page for more information:

As of Aug. 1, 2007, the province now charges a waste management fee, levied at the time of purchase so that equipment can be disposed of or recycled, free of charge. See

Encorp Pacific (Canada) Site

Additionally, if the equipment is usable, this non-profit firm tries to refurbish it for community use or charities, otherwise they will recycle it.
