An extension of Hess-Kato Theorem to Elliptic Systems and Applications

It is well known that the Hess-Kato Theorem, concerning the first eigenvalue and the first eigenfunction of the second order elliptic equation, plays an important role in nonlinear analysis. This theorem now is extended to a class of elliptic systems based on the Maximum Principle due to Sweers. Applications to bifurcations and multiple critical points for systems are studied. In particular the critical group characterization of mountain pass point is also extended to systems.
